Uncharitable: How Restraints on Nonprofits Undermine Their Potential by Dan Pallotta
In Uncharitable, author Dan Pallotta argues a fascinating point to us: that the nonprofit sector has been placed at an extreme disadvantage because of the double standards that exist in our society regarding what resources they have access to and which rules they must abide by. We blame capitalism for creating inequities such as poverty and hunger in our society, but we don’t allow nonprofit organizations to use all the tools that should be at their disposal to help better them.
Pallotta’s book educates us on how unjust the not-for-profit world really is and compellingly writes about equal economic rights for charity.

Tierney left Bain & Company, a very prestigious consulting firm, to co-found The Bridgespan Group, a nonprofit focused on helping donors and nonprofit leaders to develop and execute strategies to increase their social change impact. In Give Smart, Tierney combines his wisdom with Duke professor Joel L. Fleishman's knowledge to design this text for philanthropists and the nonprofit organizations they support—one of the best resources about engaged giving.

With Charity for All: Why Charities are Failing and a Better Way to Give by Ken Stern
Unlike private businesses that respond to the market and go out of business when they fail, nonprofit organizations have an extremely low limit to entry. The IRS accepts 99.5% of applications, and once nonprofit organizations are founded, they don’t often go under. Ken Stern writes of the saddening truth which is that the majority of nonprofit organizations are established, raise and spend millions of dollars in attempt to make a difference in their causes, but unfortunately aren’t ever able to make a dent in solving the problems they said they would.
But he also came upon some good news: there is now a growing movement toward responsibility and success in the nonprofit world. With Charity for All is a wonderful read, showing us how there has been a big problem in charity’s history because of our donating to nonprofit organizations that ultimately make no impact. Stern gives us hope in his last few chapters with his ideas on individual giving and widespread change.
